January 6, 2015 We've been working with 3D printing technology for a while, but we've finally built some support software worthy of distribution. Trace2SCAD: Converting Images Into OpenSCAD Models is a simple script that automates creation of bounded-complexity OpenSCAD 3D models from 2D images.

November 17-20, 2014 We will once again have a major research exhibit at , in New Orleans, LA. See us there!

November 17-20, 2014

October 2014 We've been using CHDK (Canon Hack Development Kit) for many years, but last year created a reference card for it. It's now on the CHDK Wiki as CHDK Lua Reference Card , as well as being linked from Aggregate.Org's CHDK for Computational Photography page. There will be much more going up there shortly, largely related to our Very Fine Ladies Women Ballroom Dance Shoes EK2784 LED Limited Edition With 25 Heel Black Satin 0cKrcXt1

Literally translated as “staging in action,” mise-en-scène originated in the theater and is used in film to refer to everything that goes into the composition of a shot–framing, movement of the camera and characters, lighting , set design and the visual environment, and SoftScience Soft Science Unisex The Skiff Flip Flop Chocolate / Light Blue ojkDt0h2GB

Early Cinema

Early cinema’s finished products were often closer to stage dramas, with a static camera stringing together a series of narrative sections. Georges Méliès’ A Trip to the Moon (1902) is an example of this tendency toward the theatrical as opposed to the cinematic. The beginnings of cinematic mise-en-scène are still apparent.

The term “mise-en-scène” is often used in film criticism to refer to the director’s control over what appears in the film frame–ranging from real locations to the studio soundstage. In Robert Weine’s 1919 film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari , we see a dramatic example of a world that is completely artificial. Furthermore, Conrad Veidt’s portrayal of the character Cesare shows the importance that acting plays in mise-en-scène.

In Hollywood during the 1930s and ‘40s, the style and look of a film could easily be associated with a particular studio. Vincente Minnelli’s film Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) is an excellent example of the MGM style: elaborate sets, lit using full, high-key lighting, taking advantage of the biggest costume, property, and art departments in Hollywood.

Similarly, film noir in the postwar period developed its own mise-en-scène. In this sequence from Mildred Pierce (1945), the mise-en-scène emphasizes familiar themes in noir, like the idea of no escape and the state of being on the run.

Questioning the Edges of Design

Windows of New York , by José Guízar, a designer and art director based in New York, is a wonderfully simple idea, elegantly executed. It is, exactly what it sounds like, a series of beautifully illustrated windows of New York.

As Guízar puts it:

[It is] a collection of windows that somehow caught my restless eye… The project is part ode to architecture and part self-challenge to never stop looking up.

Take a look, it's a lovely, "Weekly illustrated atlas."

I’m a terrible ALDO Womens Meranen Fashion Sneaker Silver XFx1Ph
. Given the choice between working on the task at hand or moonlighting on something ‘a little more interesting’, I’ll opt for the latter every time.

Don’t get me wrong, I rarely miss a deadline, I’m just late binding.

Late binding is a technical term drawn from the field of computer science, which essentially means delaying decisions until as late as possible. As our computer scientist friends would put it, delaying decisions until runtime.

As Don Norman puts it, in Minnetonka Womens Pacific Slipon Shoes 670P Stone Suede 8GpbL7
, late-binding (delay, or procrastination) offers many benefits:

Delaying decisions until the time for action is beneficial for lots of reason. First, it provides the maximum amount of time to think, plan, and determine alternatives. Second, it enhances flexibility, allowing the actual action to take full advantage of the unique circumstances at the time it is required. And third, because the requirements are continually shifting and changing, delaying decisions allows the most current issues and situations to be accommodated.

All are compelling arguments for late binding, however, it is a passage towards the end of Norman’s piece that caught me:

Note too that deadlines are equally valuable. Without the rapidly approaching deadline when I have to stand up after dinner and deliver this after-dinner talk, I would still be procrastinating. A lack of time pressure allows the mind to be creative, to explore possibilities. A bit of stress focuses the mind, allowing the final compilation of all the earlier random, creative thoughts. Late binding is beneficial.

Your mileage may vary, of course, but late binding might be a strategy worth exploring. It certainly works for me, allowing me the latitude to explore, en route, to the task at hand.

Thanks to the generous support of Prompt , I'll be in Harrogate to take part in Work in the Web , an education initiative developed and delivered by digital agency .

Delivered across three days of intensive workshops – 21–23 January – I'll be contributing to a number of the sessions, and delivering a session titled Design for the Web , which explores typography at both the macro and micro level. I'll also be speaking about the importance of work-life balance, and the importance of working on what matters, both topics close to my heart.

Notably, when the 1891 New Mexico Territorial Legislature appropriated $1,200 "to catalogue, number, index, bind, and translate the old Spanish and Mexican archives," Bandelier was hired for the job. Bandelier indicated that he had finished arranging the archives on 25 June 1891, but aside from a list of 1074 documents, a list which is no longer extant, no translations or index have surfaced. Nearly $2000 was appropriated by the legislature in 1891 and 1893 and additional expenses were paid from the Governor's contingency funds for the project. [31]

In 1888 the archives were moved from the Palace of the Governors, where they had been kept for nearly two centuries, to the recently completed Territorial capitol building. [32] There seems to have been a collective sigh of relief from all concerned. New Mexico's archives were at last within a secure building where they would be safe from the elements.

Ironically, after surviving the previous centuries of leaky roofs, neglect, and vandalism, the archives soon came close to being completely destroyed in the one place where all agreed they were safe at last. In 1892, the new capital was destroyed by a fire which has often been described as being "of suspicious origins." Quick action by librarian Facundo Pino and historian Twitchell, as well as others who knew where the archives were being stored, saved them from sure destruction. Books from the library were destroyed, along with a number of Pino's personal possessions, but the Spanish and Mexican archives escaped unharmed and were temporarily stored in a vault at the Santa Fe County Courthouse. [33]

By 1900 the archives had been transferred from the facilities provided by the County of Santa Fe to the second new capitol building, where they were placed in a "fire-proof" vault in the office of the Territorial Secretary. [34] Soon, however, Secretary George H. Wallace complained they were taking up too much space in the vault and suggested that if arrangements for their removal and preservation were not made soon, he would be forced to store them in the basement to make room for current records. At this time, Territorial Librarian José Segura and Secretary Wallace had noted that in addition to the space they were occupying, the old documents were showing signs of deterioration from frequent use and handling. According to Segura, their condition in 1898 had prompted Professor Elliot Coues of Washington, D.C., to suggest that he be allowed to take the entire collection to Washington. Coues proposed to arrange and translate the documents, after which he would return them to New Mexico along with a hundred copies of the translations. Secretary Wallace noted that such action was prohibited by territorial law but suggested that if the legislature gave their endorsement, Professor Coues's proposal could be a solution to the chronic problem of caring for the archives while still making them available to the public.
